the Dust Ups

$10 Cover at Door

The Dust-Ups blend a down-home country sound with punk rock spirit. While they all call New Jersey home today, The Dust-Ups’ origins span from New Orleans to Quebec, allowing their alt-country signature to resonate as far from regional. Before becoming known for their lively, catchy songs, the outfit was assembled in 2022 after lead vocalist/rhythm guitarist Ryan Chatelain, a veteran of the New Orleans and New York solo-acoustic scenes, laid down roots in New Jersey and put out the call for musicians on Facebook and Craigslist.

Multi-instrumentalist Joe Palmisano answered and expressed a shared fondness of some of Chatelain's biggest influences, including Old 97’s and Uncle Tupelo, and the two then partnered to start what would eventually become known as The Dust-Ups. Shortly after, bassist Stephen Swalsky, formerly of the alt-country bands Coal Palace Kings and Mud, Blood & Beer, and drummer Alek Speck, who toured the world with the indie rock group Run Run Run, completed the lineup.

So far, the four-piece band has driven their quintessential alt-country charm through the PA systems at The Stanhope House and Crossroads in New Jersey, Rockwood Music Hall in NYC and John & Peter's in New Hope, Pennsylvania, among other clubs and events. With Palmisano seamlessly switching from lead guitar to pedal steel to mandolin, crowds can always expect the unexpected.

The symbiotic songwriting relationship between Chatelain and Palmisano brings a unique dynamic to The Dust-Ups, who released their eponymous debut album March 8. Now that the polishing touches have been put on the album, The Dust-Ups are endeavoring to continue extending the legacy of alt-country while remaining inspired by country legends and channeling their fervor for the genre into euphonic harmonies and raw, heartfelt lyrics.

Organ Monk

$10 Cover at the Door

Everybody has literal and figurative homes. There are the physical places where heads are laid at night and then there are the feelings, people, activities, or spaces that provide a feeling of the comfort of home. Gregory Lewis has found a musical home delving into the Hammond organ and the music of the great composer/pianist Thelonious Monk, a practice that has allowed him opportunities to play with extraordinary musicians and visit amazing places, and his new recording Organ Monk Going Home brings all of these aspects to bear.

Growing up in New York in a Black household hailing from the South, Lewis was taught to celebrate the continent where civilization began, along with the society that these dynasties of Africa helped to create. Part of this societal foundation was the music that Lewis grew up hearing in his 1970s household, which included soul and funk music, along with jazz.

Lewis initially discovered Monk’s work through his father’s record collection. The impression made by the master was enough to inspire the young listener to attempt to learn the idiosyncratic music on piano. But it was when Lewis heard organist Larry Young perform a version of “Monk’s Dream” that Lewis knew that he wanted to focus on interpreting Monk’s music on the organ.

For Jersey City guitarist and songwriter Chris Gennone, it’s been a long road to The Ghosts Are Coming Home, the second album from his five-piece outfit CR and the Nones. Ghosts, the Nones’ second record and first on Magic Door, is a culmination of the sound and aesthetic Gennone has been building across many years and multiple bands. Its combination of expansiveness and introspection recalls The War on Drugs or early My Morning Jacket, and the ten tracks here showcase sincerity and heart that are impossible to resist.

Nighttime - https://nighttimes.bandcamp.com/album/keeper-is-the-heart

Eva Louise Goodman’s Nighttime project locates itself on a musical tree planted on the British Isles, perched atop the branch of folk leaning into sixties rock. With tempered percussion, floating mellotron, and singing that evokes Bleecker & MacDougal on a fervent Saturday afternoon, her new album Keeper Is The Heart reaches deep into the essence of musicians such as Vashti Bunyan, Sibylle Baier and Pentangle, breaking down the decades into a sound thoroughly and bizarrely modern.

What’s the Secret Behind Christine Santelli & Heather Hardy’s Musical Chemistry? Unveil Their Passion-Packed Live Album Today!

Natali Abernathy

Christine Santelli and Heather Hardy and their first joint debut live album “Live in the Parlour” cannot be overlooked. Today, you will discover how this unique energy and inspiration, infused with blues and acoustic sounds, blend to create something magnificent. But before we delve into this musical world, let’s talk about two women whose skill and passion leave no doubt.

Christine Santelli and Heather Hardy – names so closely associated with blues and country that their contribution cannot be ignored. Christine Santelli (guitar, vocals, songwriter), nominated for a Grammy and inducted into the New York Blues Hall of Fame, and Hardy (violin, vocals, songwriter), inducted into the Arizona Blues Hall of Fame in 2000. These awards are just a small part of their talent and dedication to music, which helped them become iconic figures in the industry.

...This live album is simply a gem, and perhaps one of the best musical works I’ve had the pleasure of listening to recently. The album opens with the track “Poor Me,” immediately captivating with its vibrant rhythm, Santelli’s deep vocals, and Hardy’s light violin. From the first chords, you’ll feel how the melody envelops you, how the familiar world changes around you, becoming warmer and kinder. It’s stunning!

In the track “Lily’s Song,” there’s a gentle solace found in the delicate interplay of guitar strings and dreamy violin. It seems that Christine Santelli and Heather Hardy have gone even further, creating a ballad reminiscent of a lullaby that soothes the turbulent mind. The perfectly curated setlist leaves no room for boredom! Each track complements the other, offering a unique emotional experience.

Tyrone Cotton with Special Guest Frank Messina

$10 Cover at the Door

Tyrone Cotton’s earliest musical revelation was listening to the raspy, inspirational voice of his grandfather, the Reverend Cleveland Roosevelt Williams, at his childhood home in Louisville, KY. Cotton began playing guitar along to the sounds of popular rock and blues artists and draws inspiration for his debut album from influences such as Jerry Garcia, Jimi Hendrix, Buddy Guy, and Mississippi John Hurt, who intrigued Tyrone with his “ finger pickin’ and soft, wispy voice.” Cotton’s debut album, Man Like Me, is the result of a lifelong journey of his nearly 30 years of performing in venues and as a beacon of the Louisville music community where he continues to reside today. The collection of songs developed over the past decade and documented on Man Like Me, is a deeply stirring reflection of Cotton’s own experiences which explores connection, loss, hope and resurrection, punctuated by a voice that is hauntingly evocative yet equally warm and alluring.

Frank Messina

"Frank Messina is one of the most widely recognized young poets living in America today." (Playboy Magazine). He's also a prolific painter and film actor.

Author of the critically acclaimed Full Count: The Book of Mets Poetry and Disorderly Conduct, Messina's work tackles subjects relating to human nature including themes of love, struggle, war, civic responsibility and sports fanaticism. An avid baseball enthusiast, his baseball poems and musings have seeped into the realm of pop-culture, being the subject of debate and commentary on The Howard Stern Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live and SNY-TV's Mets Weekly, where Messina's Mets-related verse is set to the visual backdrop of glorious (and not so glorious) moments in Mets history. As a result, sports fans around the world refer to Messina as "The Mets Poet".

***LOW TICKET ALERT*** An Evening with Chris Barron (of the Spin Doctors)

TICKETS!!!

The zeitgeist is a moving target, and Chris Barron has always been a crack shot. The New York songwriter is no longer the debutant who set out on the circuit’s sharp end in 1988 with $100, a battered acoustic and a headful of the alt-rock anthems that would elevate Spin Doctors to global stardom. He’s a veteran approaching 50, living in a world changed beyond recognition, compelled to write the music that chronicles the here-and-now. As far back as he can remember, he’s had a hunger driving him onward, towards something just out of reach. In 2017, it propels him to Angels and One-Armed Jugglers (due out October 20 on Chrysanthemum Records), the culmination of a lifetime’s craft and a record both contemporary and classic.

Ask Barron for a pivotal moment from his journey and he’ll rewind the reels to a high-school music theory class, where a cherished teacher advised him to “learn the rules so that you can break them.” Almost four decades later, that same irreverent wisdom hangs over Angels and One-Armed Jugglers. In a cynical era of songwriting by committee, these eleven songs rip up the verse/chorus template, eschew the stock lyrical themes and crash thrillingly among genres, as this fascinating songwriter acts entirely on instinct. “I’ve taken stock of everything I’ve learned about music,” says Barron, “and I’ve got to a point now where I’m just following my nose. These songs range from old jazz standards to funky beer-hall folk tunes. But I’ve never really been that interested in genres. I’m just interested in songs. I think the reason it’s so eclectic is because the songs were chosen more thematically than based on genre.”

Probably the biggest sore loser in the history of bowling, but a very funny guy nevertheless.”

SEAN KIELY “writes and performs music that is gentle but stubbornly unusual — full of pivots, compositional left turns, and unexpected note and chord choices. Though he and his collaborators never sound drilled, his music is impeccably performed, evocative of folk traditions, but more often redolent of the waterfront at night and the strangeness of the Hudson County post-industrial landscape than it is of the woods. Kiely is pleasantly uncompromising: friendly and approachable, but sharp-toothed. Attitude hums and hisses in his grooves.

His realization of this sound has made him a favorite in his hometown. Since the release of Your Logo, My Logo in 2015 and It Sure Was Good in 2018, he's become a regular attraction on local stages large and small. As his reputation has grown, so has his scope — and his curiosity. Kiely’s recent music is the result of exploration and inquiry with new and varied collaborators from the folk, jazz, and pop realms. Everything that endeared this artist to Jersey City remains here, including the adventurous melodies, the radiant harmonies, the smart, sharp-minded lyrics, the distinctive combination of open-heartedness and world-wise wariness, the heartbroken confessional storytelling, the nods to classic ‘60s pop, ‘70s AM gold, and ‘80s college rock recalcitrance.” – Tris McCall
